A MEMORABLE SHOT OF BRANDI: WHAT DOES HER CELEBRATION MEAN?

When U.S. Women's World Cup team D Brandi Chastain
"ripped off her shirt" following her game-winning penalty
kick against China in the WWC Finals Saturday, it was a
"conveniently revealing moment for Nike," as she showed a
Nike "prototype" sports bra -- the "Inner Active" line --
which "goes on the market in a few weeks" for $40, according
to USA TODAY. Nike Senior Corporate Communications Manager
Kathryn Reith, on Chastain's celebration: "We've been
getting a lot of calls about that." Reith added she "was
surprised as anyone" by the exposure Chastain gave the bra.
Chastain was on the "advisory committee for Nike on what
should be in a sports bra" (USA TODAY, 7/12). CNN/SI's Inga
Hammond: "Chastain's post-game celebration turned her sports
bra into the most famous article of clothing since a certain
blue dress" ("Sports Tonight," 7/11). In K.C., Mechelle
Voepel: "How about the Chastain line of sports bras?
Brandi's easy-off jerseys? ... Maybe now is the time to
start selling" U.S. WWC jerseys other than Mia Hamm's,
"including Chastain's." Chastain: "Why not? Maybe somebody
will wear it besides my mother" (K.C. STAR, 7/12). CBS's
Mark McEwen told Chastain: "I see a sponsorship on sports
bras." Chastain: "I'll talk to you afterwards" (CBS, 7/12)
BRANDI, ON BRANDI: Chastain, on her celebration: "Now
that I think about it, maybe I should have done something
different. I still think I was OK. It was the World Cup.
I scored, my team won and I was really hot. What the heck.
For the rest of my life I'll probably be remembered as the
chick who ripped her shirt off. That's fine. I'm also the
World Cup champion" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/12). More Chastain:
"Maybe it was just shedding off the weight that we had been
carrying the whole tournament" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/12).
