NAMES IN THE NEWS

          No Limit Sports agent LELAND HARDY said that "he was
     unaware" of a possible suspension by the NFLPA for
     reportedly failing the league's open-book, take-home test
     which is given to agents.  Hardy: "I haven't heard anything. 
     Also, the test results are confidential, and the NFLPA does
     not divulge scores, so I have no idea of what my score was
     or anyone else for that matter; but I doubt that I failed
     it" (N.O. TIMES-PICAYUNE, 6/29)....Despite getting "rave
     reviews," UPN has canceled "POWER PLAY," a series about a
     sports agent who "finds himself in charge of a struggling
     hockey team."  Two airings "scored the lowest ratings in the
     history of primetime network TV" (N.Y. POST, 6/30)....JACKIE
     JOYNER-KERSEE was among 13 athletes honored yesterday by
     Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, which recognizes both
     professional and amateur athletes "for their promotion of
     sportsmanship and ethical conduct in sports."  Other pro
     athletes recognized included Cardinals WR FRANK SANDERS,
     Hurricanes C RON FRANCIS, Spurs G AVERY JOHNSON and the
     SPURS (WASHINGTON POST, 6/30)....WAYNE GRETZKY announced at
     a fundraiser in L.A. Monday that he and his wife JANET JONES
     are expecting their fourth child "early next year"
     ("SportsDesk," MSG, 6/29)....In Nashville, Larry Woody
     called Winston Cup driver ERNIE IRVAN's new book "No Fear"
     one of the "most candid and insightful among the gush stock
     car racing literature currently flooding the bookshelves." 
     Irvan admits that he forgot to thank former sponsor TEXACO
     during NASCAR's Awards Banquet in '96 on ESPN which led to a
     deterioration of his relationship with the company: "Simply
     put, I blew it" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 6/29).
