MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

SLAM DUNCAN: CNN/SI's Sonja Steptoe examined the
marketability of Spurs C/F Tim Duncan, who "has yet to
cultivate a non-basketball fanbase or create an off-court
persona." Duncan: "I'm not that cross-over entertainer. ...
I'm not somebody that goes out and [is going to] do a movie
this summer or anything like that." Duncan's agent Lon
Babby: "His style is really defined by his substance, and he
will pave his own way and develop relationships with
companies that want those qualities. You can't make
     somebody into something they're not" (CNN/SI, 6/28).
CADETS THE SPIRIT! The 100th anniversary of the Army-
Navy football game will feature "more than a dozen special
promotions, including throwback uniforms" and a
"commemorative game logo" designed by N.Y.-based SME Design.
A Web site for the game "should be operational by the end of
next month" at www.ArmyNavy100.com (WASHINGTON POST, 6/26).
STERN IN CHARGE AT OLYMPIC TOWER: The SPORTSBUSINESS
JOURNAL's Andy Bernstein reports that after the departure of
NBA CMO Rick Welts, Commissioner David Stern "has taken over
stewardship" of NBAP "on a permanent basis, even heading out
on sponsorship sales calls." Media, marketing partnerships
and consumer products divisions within NBAP now report
directly to Stern (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/28 issue).
