HOW MUCH PAYNE CAN THE MARKET BEAR? STEWART SALES PUSH

Following Payne Stewart's win at the U.S. Open, his
sponsor Legg Mason "discussed plans to feature Stewart on
billboards," according to Mark Hyman of BUSINESS WEEK.
Stewart signed a three-year, $900,000 deal with Legg Mason
in January, and Legg Mason Senior VP/Marketing Tal Daley
said of the final day of the U.S. Open, "I haven't had too
many better days." Univ. of OR Warsaw Sports Marketing
Center Dir Rick Burton: "This reenergizes Payne Stewart. ...
Right now, his value is very hot." Hyman notes that after
the win, "There were even predictions of a rebound for
Stewart's underexposed clothing line." Stewart's sponsors,
Titleist and Golfsmith, each "pay five-figure bonuses for
winning a big championship" (BUSINESS WEEK, 7/5 issue).
Legg Mason congratulates Stewart on his victory in a full-
page color ad in the current GOLF WORLD (THE DAILY).
