          RICHARD PETTY is recuperating in a Greensboro, NC,
     hospital following bleeding ulcers.  Petty's son, KYLE, said
     his father is "stabilized" and "doing pretty good" (AP,
     6/27)....Univ. of MN President MARK YUDOF said that men's
     basketball coach CLEM HASKINS will receive $1.5M in
     severance pay, despite "convincing evidence" of "numerous,
     maybe even massive incidents of academic misconduct" in the
     program....News Corp. Chair RUPERT MURDOCH and former Star
     TV exec WENDI DENG were married Friday aboard Murdoch's
     yacht in N.Y. Harbor (Mult., 6/26)....Orioles RF ALBERT
     BELLE is contributing "an occasional piece" to the "new
     tabloid" BALTIMORE PRESS.  Belle's first column, which
     examines teacher salaries, was published Friday (WASHINGTON
     POST, 6/26)...Artist PETER MAX is completing a SAMMY SOSA
     painting and will sell 20 original prints for $30,000, 466
     limited-edition serigraphs for $4,500 and 166 overpainted
     serigraphs for $9,800.  1,066 hand-painted baseballs,
     autographed by both Max and Sosa, will sell for $1,000 each
     (WASHINGTON POST, 6/26)....Pain from hip-replacement surgery
     "became so great" for JACK NICKLAUS during the Senior
     Players Championship, that he was forced to use a cart. 
     Nicklaus, who has spoken out against CASEY MARTIN's request
     to use a cart on the PGA TOUR: "No, my position has not
     changed.  I hate them" (DETROIT NEWS, 6/27).
