WTA TOUR ROCKED WITH RACISM TAG BY PLAYER'S MOTHER

Samantha Stevenson, the mother of 18-year-old WTA Tour
player Alexandra Stevenson, "says there's racism on the WTA
Tour perpetrated by some of the players, in addition to the
fans," according to Al Picker of the Newark STAR-LEDGER.
Samantha Stevenson: "At Roehampton for the (Wimbledon)
qualifying, Alexandra was called a [racial expletive] by a
player on the court during a match." Samantha Stevenson
"did not identify" the player, and added, "You wouldn't
believe some of the comments her opponents make to me when
I'm sitting in the stands during her matches." WTA Tour CEO
Bart McGuire, in a written response: "The WTA Tour is made
up of players from a myriad of ethnic, cultural and racial
backgrounds. We pride ourselves on our diversity, openness
and competitive spirit. That being said, we are
disappointed that (Stevenson's) assertions have been made to
the press and not the Tour" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/28).
