The Mariners played their final game in the Kingdome
last night in front of 56,530 fans (SEATTLE POST-
INTELLIGENCER, 6/28). Mariners GM Woody Woodward, on the
Kingdome: "I've never cared for it from the first day" (AP,
6/27)....Vikings Owner Red McCombs told the ST. PAUL PIONEER
PRESS that he "wants the team's stadium situation settled
this year and wants the team playing in a new stadium or
refurbished Metrodome by the 2001 season" (ST. PAUL PIONEER
PRESS, 6/27)....In Baltimore, Jon Morgan cited city
officials as saying that a new arena "could be paid for with
a special, regional tax" and "serve as an anchor for the
revitalization of downtown's western edge." The three
scenarios being examined include a 19,000-seat arena for an
NBA team, a 17,500-seat arena for an NHL team, or a 12,000-
seat arena "that could be expanded" (Baltimore SUN,
6/25)....The Brewers have determined that following the
grant of $50M in loans from various organizations, the
selling of naming rights for $20M and a recently signed
concessionaire agreement with Sportservice Corp. for an
undisclosed amount, they "don't need" the AL's $10M letter
of credit which was extended to the team for construction of
Miller Park (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/26).
