          WOMEN IN SPORTS AND EVENTS (WISE) held its annual WISE
     Women of the Year Awards luncheon last week in N.Y. to honor
     women in the sports and events industry.  This year's
     honorees: Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Founder
     NANCY BRINKER; Univ. of TN women's basketball coach PAT
     SUMMITT; and JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE (WISE)....The UNIV. OF MI
     ATHLETIC DEPT. is "expected to report an estimated" $2M
     deficit in its $46M budget.  The deficit is "caused mainly
     by" a $1.5M drop in licensing royalties for collegiate
     apparel and a $200,000 decline in ticket sales for men's
     basketball games.  UM leads the $2.5B-a-year licensed
     collegiate apparel business and averages "about" $5M a year
     in royalties (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/23)....USA TODAY's Tom
     Pedulla, on heavyweight boxer MICHAEL GRANT: "In a division
     still reeling from the antics of champion-turned-chomper
     MIKE TYSON, [Grant] appears to be a refreshing personality"
     (USA TODAY, 6/23)....Agent DWIGHT MANLEY has signed Kings
     F/C OLIVER MILLER (USA TODAY, 6/23)....ESPN's Stuart Scott
     quoted Knicks G CHRIS CHILDS on the left knee ligament
     sprain he suffered in Game Three of the NBA Finals: "I
     stayed up all night Monday watching MASTER P wrestle, so you
     know it must've hurt" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 6/22)....TOM
     HICKS was profiled by Beverly Schuch on CNNfn's "Business
     Unusual."  Hicks, on Chancellor Media's combined radio
     revenues of $1.5B: "We're the biggest and the baddest and
     the best."  But Schuch reported that some critics "say
     Chancellor has grown too much, too quickly, causing its
     stock to lag media competitors" (CNNfn, 6/22)....The "Late
     Show"'s BIFF HENDERSON visited MSG before the Spurs-Knicks
     Game Three.  Henderson, to Knicks G RICK BRUNSON: "Did you
     hear they just recalled a batch of MICHAEL JORDAN's cologne? 
     It gave some guy in Belgium third degree burns."  Henderson,
     to Brunson: "Any chance you could get LATRELL SPREWELL to
     choke SPIKE LEE?" ("Late Show," CBS, 6/22).
