NAMES IN THE NEWS

          76ers President PAT CROCE's "Ocean-to-Ocean Trip" on
     his motorcycle lasted "a bit more than 60 minutes and 50
     miles" before he suffered multiple fractures to his left leg
     in an accident in rainy weather.  Croce underwent surgery at
     the Univ. of PA last night.  His recovery time should be 12
     to 24 weeks.  NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN: "His leg may be
     broken, but, knowing Pat, his spirit isn't."  Dr. WILLIAM
     DELONG, who performed the surgery: "He had a smile on his
     face when he hit the door" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/18).
          Mets P OREL HERSHISER has spent more than $60,000 to
     send 1,600 copies of the "Devotional Bible For Dads" to
     every MLBer, every PGA Tour player and every national and
     local baseball sportscaster (USA TODAY, 6/18)....In N.Y.,
     Jack Newfield reports that federal prosecutors feel they
     have "enough evidence to indict promoter" DON KING for
     racketeering.  Sources say an indictment "could come in six
     to eight weeks" (N.Y. POST, 6/18)....ESPN's Sal Paolantonio
     profiled the relationship between Democratic Presidential
     candidate BILL BRADLEY and Lakers coach PHIL JACKSON and
     said that Bradley is "banking that Jackson's star power will
     raise his profile.  And now that Jackson's head coach of the
     Lakers, raise some money, especially" in L.A.  CNN Political
     Analyst Bill Schneider: "Bradley has found a whole new
     source of money ... jock dollars" (ESPN, 6/17).
