COURT RECORDS OFFER DETAILS ON POSSIBLE PENGUINS DRAFT

The NHL has "devised a plan to auction off Penguins
players should the bankrupt team have to be dissolved,"
according to papers filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court
and cited by Rich Lord of the Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW.
Lord: "Such an auction, called a dispersal draft, would be
important to the team's creditors because the money raised
would go toward debt." In a draft, the league office would
"set a minimum bid for each player." If only one team were
willing to meet or exceed the minimum, that team would
assume that player's contract. If more than one team met or
exceeded the minimum bid, those teams "would move to a
second round." The league would then set a "new minimum and
again invite bids." The process would continue "until only
one team met or exceeded the minimum." If "two or more
teams bid on a player, but then no team meets the subsequent
minimum bid, the player would go to whichever team had the
     worst record" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/14).
