LEAGUE NOTES

The AP reports that the NFL awarded the 2003 Super Bowl
to San Diego this morning at the owners' meetings in Atlanta
(AP, 5/26)....In Ft. Worth, Mac Engel previews the WNBA
season and writes, "It's game time and the WNBA has the
court all to itself. What will keep it from fouling out
like previous women's pro basketball leagues?" More Engel:
"More appears right with this league than wrong. People are
going to the games, players are becoming household names and
the WNBA maintains a realistic aim of growing gradually
(STAR-TELEGRAM, 5/26)....In FL, Greg Hardwig, on the CPBL:
"Now small, run-of-the-mill basketball leagues come and go
pretty quickly. But this one seems to have the backing to
survive, or at least get off the ground" (NAPLES DAILY NEWS,
5/22)....In San Antonio, Glenn Rogers, on college players
leaving school early: "Completing college, as an athlete or
not, is a wonderful opportunity. ... It's also not mandatory
for an enjoyable and fruitful existence." More Rogers, on
CBS college basketball analyst Billy Packer's recent
criticism of the NBA and NCAA for allowing players to leave
college before finishing: "What would he have done if he was
in their sneakers?" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 5/25)
