NAMES IN THE NEWS

          TV MONITOR: Last night, the 11:00pm edition of "Fox
     Sports News Primetime" (Fox Sports South) and ESPN's
     "SportsCenter" led with the 76ers-Pacers game, followed with
     an update of the Lakers-Spurs game.  The 11:00pm ET
     "SportsCenter" was on ESPN2 due to an MLB game.  CNN/SI's
     11:00pm ET "Sports Tonight" led with the Reds-Rockies,
     followed with the Pirates-Braves (THE DAILY). 
          NAMES: WWF Owner VINCE MCMAHON is "planning to take"
     his company public and has hired Bears Stearns as the lead
     underwriter.  McMahon is "expected to sell a minority stake"
     in the company to raise about $150M (DAILY VARIETY, 5/20)... 
     The NFLPA filed a disciplinary complaint against agent TANK
     BLACK, who "plans to petition" the U.S. Attorney's office to
     investigate the union's action.  The NFLPA alleged that
     Black "provided improper cash payments" to college players
     in '97 and '98 before their eligibility was completed (PALM
     BEACH POST, 5/20)....Prospective Capitals Minority Owner JON
     LEDECKY is starting an investment firm that will fund and
     advise start-up Internet ventures.  The firm, called
     E2ENet.com Inc., "hopes to grow quickly" by selling $138.5M
     in stock to the public (WASHINGTON POST, 5/20)....In
     Chicago, Janet Kidd Stewart examined the role of women in
     pro sports and wrote, "There is some scant evidence,
     however, that women are making inroads beyond the locker
     room and into the front office."  N.Y.-based Women in Sports
     & Events, founded by SUE RODIN, is "growing quickly" with
     1,000 members (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/19)....DOUG FLUTIE will
     sign copies of his autobiography, "Flutie," at the Boston
     College Bookstore May 22 (Sports Publishing)....On "60
     Minutes II," Bob Simon profiled boxer OSCAR DE LA HOYA, and
     said, "If ever the sport needed a savior, the Golden Boy,
     it's now. ... He is a champion.  He is a star. ... He's not
     only the hottest boxer today, but he's the hottest property
     in boxing and quite possibly, with the retirement of MICHAEL
     JORDAN, in all of sports" ("60 Minutes II," CBS, 5/19).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown.
