LEAGUE NOTES

USA Track & Field CEO Craig Masback, on the progress at
USATF: "I have really moved beyond the death and destruction
and rising phoenix-like from the ashes. The sport is out
there on the street for the first time to let the sponsors
know the inherent strengths of track and running"
     (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 5/16). In S.F., the $3.3M track
and field facility, Edwards Stadium, is set for completion
in August on the Univ. of CA campus. There is "talk" of
placing an IAAF Grand Prix meet there, perhaps "bankrolled
by Nike." CA coach Erv Hunt: "We're going to put it on USA
Track & Field. Craig Masback talks a good fight, but what
has he done? He's got a lot of great ideas. He's been
here. He says he loves it, so here's your great facility"
(S.F. EXAMINER, 5/17)....PBA Commissioner Mark Gerberich, on
staging its live CBS telecast from Bryant Park in N.Y.: "We
hit a home run. It was the most publicity we've ever
generated for a tournament" (MIAMI HERALD, 5/16).
