BEARS' PHILLIPS LOOKS TO WRAP UP STADIUM PLANS SOON

          Bears President Ted Phillips said yesterday he "hopes
     to cut a stadium deal" with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in
     "time for legislative action during the fall veto session of
     the General Assembly, according to Fran Spielman of the
     CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.  Phillips also made a "strong pitch for a
     renovated Soldier Field."  Phillips said that he is
     "convinced" that with an "expedited construction schedule
     that includes premium pay for nights and weekends, the
     renovation could be completed in 20 months."  Possible
     replacement sites in the interim include Comiskey Park,
     Wrigley Field, Notre Dame Stadium and Northwestern's Ryan
     Field.  Phillips said the latest design for a renovated
     Soldier Field includes a "unique" plan that places 60% of
     all stadium seats on the sidelines (SUN-TIMES, 5/19).
