SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT RUNNING: USATF NAMES SITES FOR SERIES
Published May 13, 1999
USATF "announced the sites" of the Golden Spike Tour, a
five-meet outdoor series that will be carried on national TV
each weekend from this Saturday through the end of June,
according to Ron Reid of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. The
series will begin and end in OR, launching Saturday with the
adidas OR Track Classic in Portland, and ending with the
U.S. national championships in Eugene, June 24-27. Other
events are the U.S. Open at Southern IL Univ. on May 22, the
TFA Pro Championships on Long Island on June 6 and the
Pontiac Grand Prix Invitational in Raleigh, NC, on June 12.
USATF and five sponsors will spend more than $3M on the
events (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 5/13). In Boston, Barbara
Huebner reports that CBS will broadcast the adidas and
Pontiac events, while ESPN has the U.S Open, the TFA and the
June national championship (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/13).
