HEAD'S UP: PENN ACQUIRED TO IMPROVE TENNIS BALL MARKET SHARE

Austria-based Head Tyrolia Mares has acquired Penn
Racquet Sports and its AZ-based tennis ball manufacturing
plant from OH-based manufacturing company GenCorp, according
to Peter Corbett of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC, who writes that
the deal "will create a powerful doubles team in tennis
equipment." Head is the second leading tennis racket
manufacturer with a 23% share of the racket market, behind
Wilson's 28% market share. Penn is the "the No. 1 maker of
tennis balls and racket balls," with a 34% share of the
int'l market, compared to Wilson's 24% market share. The
combined entity "is expected to generate" $170M in revenue
this year. No changes are planned for the 400 employees at
Penn's Phoenix plant and Penn President George Weida will
"continue to run the company" (AZ REPUBLIC, 5/11).
