IS WOODS, DUVAL MADE-FOR-TV EVENT A SLAM OR A SHAM?
IMG and ABC Sports "plan to announce" today an 18-hole, prime-time exhibition match between David Duval and Tiger Woods at Sherwood Country Club in CA on August 2. The winner will receive $1.1M, with a portion of the earnings going to the players' charity and The First Tee program (Mult., 5/8). The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Andy Bernstein reports that ABC is currently marketing sponsorship packages around the event and that Woods' "backers" AmEx and Rolex are "expected to get the first crack" at deals (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/10). In N.Y., Mike Lupica called the proposed event "junk," and writes that "the two golfers, if they go forward, should both be ashamed of themselves" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/9). Lupica: "If Duval and Woods want to have a real rivalry, they shouldn't have their handlers make it for them. If they're good enough, they should make it for themselves" ("The Sports Reporters," 5/9).
