HANDLERS STRESS HOLDSCLAW'S GAME ... ON AND OFF THE COURT

Former Univ. of TN star Chamique Holdsclaw "has already
captured the sports market," as Nike and adidas began
"wooing her even before" her college eligibility ended in
March, according to CNN/SI's Sonja Steptoe, who said that
"everyone from WNBA officials to women's sports advocates to
Holdsclaw herself is hoping that she will become the first
female athlete with Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods-like
crossover appeal.'" Holdsclaw has even "hired a manager"
whose specialty is "charting the careers of fashion models."
Jack McCue of McCue Associates, Sports & Entertainment,
Holdsclaw's manager, said, "We want boys to be able to look
at Chamique and be able to say, `Wow, she's cool, you know,
and at the same time she's a great athlete, and at the same
time, you know, she's hot.' ... We want little girls to be
able to be like, 'Wow, she's beautiful, but, you know, she
can play sports, too, and can do that -- you know, I can
wear her shoe and, tomorrow, go out and buy her cosmetics.'"
McCue arranged for Holdsclaw to audition for two film roles
and is "in talks" with soft drink and cosmetics companies
about endorsements. Holdsclaw: "I think you have to be
feminine; you know, you can't be, you know, a basketball
player, and also be a basketball player off the court and be
rough. You just have to, you know ... be kind of female,
because that's what we are." McCue says that he may "spice
up Holdsclaw's image with a dose of sexiness." McCue: "It's
tough because, you know, a lot of female athletes are
considered, you know, hard and not able to be sexy or
beautiful, but I think that certain ones today are changing
that image, and Chamique is one of them" (CNN, 4/33).
WNBA RULES POSE A CHALLENGE? Steptoe noted that the
WNBA restricts player endorsements during the season, and
while McCue "looks for ways around the rules, Holdsclaw
isn't sweating." Holdsclaw: "If I have two or three good
sponsors, that's good enough for me, because I don't need to
be running around, and have my face on every poster,
because, you know, it's overexposure. ... I think Mr. McCue
is kind of pushing it a little bit more than me, but I think
I'll just enjoy it" ("The Sporting Life," CNN, 4/24).
