FINANCE NOTES: WHAT DOES STARTER'S BANKRUPTCY MEAN?

In N.Y., Mike Freeman wrote there "could be a major
shake-up in the next few months" at NFLP relating to the
"deals it made with Starter," which filed for bankruptcy.
The league "could lose millions of dollars on things like
uniform purchases" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/25). In a SPORTSBUSINESS
JOURNAL Cover Story, Andy Bernstein examines the impact of
Starter's bankruptcy and reports that the leagues "must seek
the bankruptcy court's approval in order to redistribute"
Starter's licensee rights to other companies. Bernstein
adds that it is "not inconceivable that Nike would buy the
Starter brand name" in its effort to "become the licensed
market leader once and for all." NBAP VP/Apparel Sal La
Rocca, on Starter's bankruptcy: "At this point, it's a
little premature for us to understand what impact it will
have on our business" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 4/26 issue).
