RATINGS NOTES: Sunday's Penguins-Rangers game, which was Wayne Gretzky's NHL finale, was the highest-rated "NHL on Fox" regular season broadcast since March 31, 1996, which drew a 2.2/6. For the season, the "NHL on Fox" averaged a 1.4, equaling last season's average. Final-season averages for '97 and '96, respectively, were 1.9 and 2.1 (Fox). In Long Beach, Bob Keisser writes on the 2.2/6 rating for Gretzky's finale: "If the icon of your sport can't draw a TV crowd in his last game, it's a sign of a real severe illness" (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 4/23)....The "NBA on NBC" is averaging a 4.4/10 through its 23 games this season, down 4% from last year's final-season 4.6/12 (NBC)....The WTA Tour's Bausch & Lomb Championships Monica Seles-Ruxandra Dragomir final on Sunday, April 11, drew a 1.40 cable rating, making it the highest rated WTA Tour event on ESPN since '93. ESPN's WTA Tour ratings are up 9% from '98 (WTA). For broadcast numbers, one ratings point = 994,000 homes. For cable, "Cov. Area" = % of homes tuned in to that program in that network's universe of subscribers.
