BEARS ASK FOR DESIGN PLANS FOR NEW FACILITY NEAR COMISKEY

          The Bears have "asked a Boston architect to draft"
     plans for a new football stadium next to Comiskey Park,
     rather than "trying to persuade" Mayor Richard Daley "to
     drop his opposition to a lakefront site," according to Fran
     Spielman of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.  City Hall sources said
     that the Comiskey "site now is the only parcel in play in
     the Bears stadium sweepstakes."  Sources said that Bears
     President Ted Phillips asked MA-based architect Ben Wood to
     "examine" the site north of Comiskey "to see if there is
     enough room" on the parking lots where the old baseball
     stadium was to "build a new football stadium."  Spielman
     calls the selection of Wood "a mild blow to the HOK Sports
     Facilities Group, the firm that designed Comiskey and knows
     the site better than anybody" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/23).
