DAWG ON IT! BROWNS REFUSE TO ALTER LOOK, BUT POUND GETS LOGO

Browns President Carmen Policy, on ESPN's "Up Close,"
discussed the team maintaining the integrity of the Browns
marks: "Well, the amazing thing is New York and all the
marketing gurus came to us and they wanted us to do a
secondary logo, and they wanted us to change, perhaps, the
helmet, the classic orange helmet, and put something on it.
Dress it up and bring it into the next millennium. [Browns
Owner] Al Lerner said under no circumstances. As a matter
of fact, he was more than adamant, he was almost insulting
to them and he indicated, 'That's not the Cleveland Browns.'
     ... We haven't changed a thing" ("Up Close," 4/19).
A DAWG'S WORLD: The Browns' "Dawg Pound" has received
its own officially licensed logo. The logo, which contains
the word "Dawg" on top and "Pound" across the bottom,
depicts a helmeted dog with a football in its mouth. The
logo will appear on sportswear and merchandise, but not on
the team's helmets or uniforms (WASHINGTON POST, 4/20).
