LEAGUE NOTES

          MLS: MLS Commissioner Doug Logan said that MLS owners
     will "sell off a minority position" in the league through an
     IPO "within five years."  Logan: "It's going to happen, and
     I think it will be a good thing when it happens" (DAILY
     SOUTHTOWN, 4/18)....The Clash-United game Saturday at RFK
     Stadium drew 35,167, MLS' largest regular-season crowd since
     35,032 attended the United's '96 inaugural game (AP, 4/18). 
          WNBA: In Chicago, Steve Tucker writes that the cities
     being considered for a WNBA expansion franchise include
     Chicago, Boston, Oakland, and Philadelphia, with Denver and
     Indianapolis as "the leaders" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/18).  
          WTA: Lindsay Davenport, on the petition signed two
     weeks ago "urging for equal" prize money for women in the
     top tier Grand Slam events: "We weren't sure that the WTA
     was fighting hard enough for us, and we wanted the tour to
     step up to the plate and defend us" (USA TODAY, 4/19).
