STEINBRENNER: YANKEES WILLING TO STAY PUT WITH INVESTMENTS

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner "has now publicly
expressed interest" in keeping the Yankees in the Bronx and
has "also extended his requests" for government investment
in a new ballpark, according to David Herszenhorn of the
N.Y. TIMES, who writes that Steinbrenner is seeking funds
from "not only the state and the city but the Federal
Government as well." In this week's issue of Crain's N.Y.
Business, Steinbrenner "suggested" that city, state and
federal officials "develop a comprehensive plan for
revitalizing the area surrounding Yankee Stadium" (N.Y.
TIMES, 4/13). Also in N.Y., Michael Finnegan writes that
N.Y. "continues to plow hundreds of thousands of dollars
into plans to build the Yankees a ballpark" on Manhattan's
West Side. Records obtained by the DAILY NEWS show that
Giuliani's administration is paying consultants to "draft a
schematic design for a new Yankee Stadium over the West Side
rail yards." The project is also to include designs for "a
new or renovated Yankee Stadium in the Bronx." The designs
for all three options are expected to take "several months
to finish." Giuliani, asked if Manhattan ballpark plans
were "dead": "Nothing is ever dead" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/13).
