DO BASEBALL WRITERS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH AWARD SPONSORSHIP?

MLB "would like" the recently unveiled Hank Aaron Award
Presented By Country Time Lemonade, which will be presented
to the "best all-around hitter" in each league, to be
"determined in the future on a more subjective basis and has
had discussions with" the BBWAA to appoint a committee of
writers to vote on the award, according to Ross Newhan of
the L.A. TIMES. This year the award will be given to the
player with the most combined hits, HRs/RBIs. But Hartford
Courant writer and BBWAA Exec Secretary Jack O'Connell said,
"Most of the guys I've talked to are concerned about the
commercial tie-in with Country Time lemonade and
compromising the MVP. I don't think the Aaron Award in
itself would do that, but I also don't think we should be in
the business of selling lemonade" (L.A. TIMES, 4/11).
