LONG LIVE THE TORY PARTY! CFL CHAIR STAYS, PENZOIL A PARTNER

During the CFL Board of Governors' annual meeting on
Friday, the league retained Chair and Acting Commissioner
John Tory along with "holding the line" on the C$2.1M cap
for player salaries on each team this year when a new CBA is
"needed," according to Grant Kerr of the Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL. Tory told the Board of Governors that the CFL hopes
to turn a profit in '99, but refused to disclose how many of
the eight franchises lost money. Tory added that new CBA
talks will resume soon. League President Jeff Giles said
that corporate sponsors Molson Brewery, Chrysler Canada, Tim
Horton Donuts and adidas "will return to bolster CFL
finances, along with newcomer Penzoil." Giles: "There's a
tremendous amount of interest from corporate Canada, more
than we've seen before. ... Our goal for 1999 is to double
sponsorship revenue" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/10).
