FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM: FIREMAN TURNS DOWN $500,000 BONUS

MA-based Reebok Chair & CEO Paul Fireman turned down a
"bonus of more than $500,000" last year, as the company
"struggled to reverse sagging sales," according to Greg
Gatlin of the BOSTON HERALD. Fireman, who "could have
earned a bonus equal to his" $1M '98 base salary "had he met
performance goals," qualified for a bonus worth 50% of his
salary, but "declined to take the bonus." Reebok's
directors "in charge of compensating" Fireman "agreed he
should not take the bonus ... citing" the company's "overall
financial performance." Fireman, whose base salary "has
held fairly steady at about" $1M since '90, received no
stock options in '98, after receiving 111,150 options in
'97. Of the company's "top five officers," only CFO Kenneth
Watchmaker received a '98 bonus (BOSTON HERALD, 3/27).
