IS SE RI ON HER WAY TO THE FRONT OF THE ENDORSEMENT PAK?
Published March 24, 1999
Two months after Se Ri Pak signed with IMG, "talks are
under way" for her to sign deals with Callaway and Maxfli,
which would be "her first equipment endorsements," according
to Doug Ferguson of the AP. One industry source said that
the "major hurdle" to a Callaway deal "will be what" the
company "will get in return." Of "major importance" to
Callaway is its ability to "build" an ad campaign around
Pak, "particularly in Asia, where Callaway does big
business," and where Pak has Tiger Woods-like "appeal." The
source: "Without that, there's no point in a deal." Another
factor is whether Pak would wear a Callaway logo, as her
primary sponsor Samsung "insists on having its name [on] her
hat." But Pak could "perhaps" carry a Callaway bag, and the
company could "get the side of the hat or a shirt sleeve."
A source close to Maxfli said that a deal with Pak "could be
announced within the month" (AP, 3/24).
