JOHN MCMULLEN SAYS NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER, ON ARENA PLAN

          With three arena development proposals on her desk, NJ
     Gov. Christie Whitman's "goal" is to keep both the Devils
     and Nets in the state -- "preferably playing in one arena
     built almost entirely with private funds," according to an
     analysis by Doug Most of the Bergen RECORD.   Whitman's
     Special Counsel Rick Mroz said, "We have told them: 'You
     folks are going to have to come together.'"  The most
     "logical solution would be for both teams" to play at a
     renovated Meadowlands, but both teams say that "is not in
     their future."   Several sources "suggested a single move
     that could solve the problem: common ownership of both New
     Jersey teams."  Nets President Michael Rowe: "The Devils
     know of our interest in getting together with them."  Devils
     Owner John McMullen: "I'm not selling. ... I'd rather go to
     the Meadowlands than Newark, but I won't do that either.  I
     have a lot of fans in Bergen County, and I could never get
     them to Newark.  It's too far for them" (RECORD, 3/21).
