SI For Women "does prove that good intentions do not
necessarily make a good magazine," but it's "noble effort
isn't quite on the way to publishing damnation," according
to Chris Zelkovich of the TORONTO STAR, who writes that the
magazine's "art work and writing are far from inspirational"
and its photography "is equally uninspired." But the
title's "biggest failing" is that it "lacks an edge."
Zelkovich calls the writing "at best pedantic and at its
worst more suited to a local newspaper." He concludes: "SI
says it will reassess the magazine after this year. It
might be advised to make it look like something more than
SI's little girl" (TORONTO STAR, 3/16). In the
SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, Ellen Zavian writes that SI For
Women will "have a tough time with advertisers who don't
recognize women's interest in sports." SI For Women
Publishing Dir Cleary Simpson "expects that it will take
advertisers awhile" to view women interested in sports as a
"viable niche," but the title "will not change the content
just to please the advertisers." Simpson: "We realize the
fitness marketplace has a broader number of readers but is
also an older segment" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/15 issue).
THE RACE IS ON: CA-based Racer Communications will
launch a new bi-monthly publication in May titled Champ Car,
which will provide coverage of the CART series. Jeremy
Shaw, who has edited the Champ Car Yearbook and On Track,
will be the Editor of the new title (Racer Communications).
