OLYMPIC NOTES

USOC Exec Dir Dick Schultz said that next month's
meeting in Switzerland could produce "major institutional
changes. That's the impression I get." Asked if the
removal of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch would be a
positive step for Olympic reform, Schultz said, "It would
depend upon who replaces him. If the vote of confidence
comes back negative, then it's a whole new ballgame. Our
hope is that Samaranch can stay in control until they put
some of these new things in motion" (GAZETTE TELEGRAPH,
2/22)....Picabo Street was asked by Matt Lauer on "Today" if
she thought some people would "turn away" from the Games
because they are "all about money." Street: "No. I think
we've got a long way to go to end up in the NBA ring like
that and have people turn away from our sport like that
because we as athletes don't deserve that punishment and I
think American society is smarter than that to know that the
athletes aren't the ones doing this" (NBC, 2/22).
