EXPOS OWNERSHIP CONSORTIUM CLOSES IN ON FINAL PLANS FOR TEAM

The Expos ownership consortium will hold a press
conference tomorrow to "disclose the current state of their
efforts to find new investment capital and build a downtown
stadium" after a three-hour meeting yesterday, according to
Stephanie Myles of the Montreal GAZETTE. Expos Chair
Jacques Menard said that the consortium will speak with MLB
officials "sometime (today)," with "most of the partners ...
convening" at tomorrow's press conference to update "the
status of our discussions" (Montreal GAZETTE, 2/17). In DC,
Eric Lipton writes that one Expos official said that it
"looked like the team might finally be put up for sale after
drawing fewer fans than any other team last year." William
Collins, head of Virginia Baseball, a group trying to bring
MLB to VA, wouldn't comment on any "recent contact" with the
Expos (WASHINGTON POST, 2/17). In Toronto, Jeff Blair
writes that N.Y.-based art dealer Jeffrey Loria could be
interested in the team. A front-page story in La Presse
said that MLB had "opened the doors" for the Expos to bring
in Loria. The story also "quoted" Single-A Vermont Expos
Owner Ray Pecor as saying that he spoke with the Expos about
"being involved as a minor owner" (GLOBE & MAIL, 2/17).
