Red Sox CEO John Harrington said that the team "had
made no final decisions" about the scope or size of a new
ballpark, according to Meg Vaillancourt of the BOSTON GLOBE.
In his "first extensive interview" on the subject,
Harrington said the team would be interested in being a part
of extensive off-field development "only if additional
revenues are needed to help the team build the new park."
Harrington said it is the "need for a new ballpark and
putting the best product on the field that's driving us, not
the desire to suddenly become developers off the field. We
have some concepts, but we're still reviewing several
options." Harrington also denied rumors that the Yawkey
Trust agreement requires him to sell the team soon: "There
is nothing in the trust requiring me to sell the team at any
particular time. And I don't think that we will have to
take on new partners in order to build a new ballpark."
Harrington: "People seem convinced that we've been doing a
lot of planning regarding development outside of a new
ballpark, but that's just not true" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/27).
