WITH PUBLIC FUNDS "EXHAUSTED," MARINERS TO PICK UP TAB

The Mariners will "start picking up the tab" for the
construction on their new ballpark, according to Leslie
Brown of the Tacoma NEWS-TRIBUNE. The 45,600-seat ballpark
"now appears" to cost $498M, $81M more than the original
budget. The $372M in public funds "has been nearly
exhausted," so the Mariners "will be paying" the $100M "or
so" still left. The team "declined to specify" where the
funds will come from, but the owners are likely to "borrow
against the team." The team has already "kicked in" $22.5M
toward the construction (Tacoma NEWS-TRIBUNE, 1/11).
