WILL NBA PLAYERS GIVE MAILMAN A LUMP OF COAL FOR CHRISTMAS?

NBPA President Patrick Ewing spoke on Karl Malone's
weekend comments that the current proposal was "fair" but
needed some minor changes: "We don't agree with him. ... On
paper, it looks OK, but not when it's dissected" (N.Y.
TIMES, 12/22). Knicks C Herb Williams: "Unless you're
sitting in a negotiating room and negotiating the deal, you
really don't know what is on the table. The deal looks good
for the top-end superstar players, but (not) when you look
at it for the guys in the middle" (N.Y. POST, 12/22).
CHRISTMAS IS COMING: Negotiating team member/Sonics C
Jim McIlvaine: "The consensus is that once the commissioner
is through with his vacation, we're ready to start
negotiating" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/22). Rockets F Eddie
Johnson: "I think that right after Christmas [Stern] will
lay out a proposal that he's had in his pocket all along, a
last, best offer. I think it'll be one that doesn't really
divide the union, but it's going to be where half think it's
good and half doesn't" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 12/22). Raptors
F Kevin Willis: "A lot of the players are just tired of the
whole thing, but others still don't like the offer. There's
always going to be discussion and disagreement, no matter
how unified a union is" (TORONTO SUN, 12/22). Sonics G Gary
Payton, on playing a 45-game schedule if a settlement is
reached: "It's too late. The season is lost to me now
anyway" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 12/22). Mavs F Kurt Thomas: "World
war should cancel the season, not labor disagreements. ... I
don't need eight cars sitting in my driveway. I live my
life as if I only make $120,000. I make a million dollars,
     but I don't live that lifestyle" (STAR-TELEGRAM, 12/22).
