NFL SIDELINE APPAREL IS A GREY MATTER IN BUFFALO

Bills coach Wade Phillips "needs to lose the sweater or
sweat shirt or shweater or whatever the grey getup is he
wears on game day," according to columnist Bucky Gleason of
the BUFFALO NEWS. The media has lampooned Phillips for
continuing to don the same grey Logo Athletic sweatshirt for
the past six weeks, and ESPN's Chris Berman has "been on
Phillips like white on rice" for the sideline apparel. But
Phillips said he is "bound by the league with certain
clothing companies, and you have to wear those things."
Logo Athletic has contracts with seven teams in the NFL, one
of which is the Bills. The company pays the Bills $200,000
for the right to "tell Phillips to wear its logo. Phillips
gets an extra stipend because he's a head coach and,
therefore, receives more television exposure." Logo
Athletic GM/Team Properties & Development Eddie White: "What
we found is that the greatest marketing tool is not the
physique of the coach or the style of the jacket. It's
wins." Phillips currently is 5-1 when wearing the Logo
Athletic sweatshirt. Phillips: "I can't wear a parka when
it's not cold out because that's going to look stupid. I
only have one sweater. If they want to give me another
sweater, I'll certainly wear it." Bills equipment manager
Dave Hojnowski unsuccessfully attempted to buy his staff the
same style grey sweater as a gift. Hojnowski: "As terrible
as Chris Berman or anyone thinks it is, someone likes them
because they sold all of them" (BUFFALO NEWS, 12/13).
