Published November 16, 1998
Gloria Estefan and Stevie Wonder will star in the Progressive Auto Insurance Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show at Pro Player Stadium on January 31, 1999. Fox will broadcast the 10-minute show, which will be produced by Radio City Entertainment, which has done five Super Bowl halftime shows (NFL). Estefan's husband, Emilio, is designing the show. Negotiations "are ongoing to secure a top swing band to attract the younger audience" (Alan Snel, SUN-SENTINEL, 11/15). NFL Dir of Corporate Communications Chris Widmaier called Wonder and Estefan "performers who appealed to a wide range of people. They are in a class by themselves" (Barry Jackson, MIAMI HERALD, 11/15).
