ADIDAS FILES SUIT AGAINST NCAA OVER LOGO RESTRICTIONS

adidas America filed suit yesterday against the NCAA in
federal court which "alleges that the NCAA's rule limiting
the display of manufacturers' logos on the athletic uniforms
of member colleges violates federal antitrust laws,"
according to Rock & Dauner of the K.C. STAR. NCAA official
Wally Renfro called the suit "another example of a
commercial enterprise trying to take out the regulation of
college sports." adidas claims that an NCAA rule restricts
schools "to selling space for only a single manufacturer's
logo or mark on apparel and limits it to 2 1/4 square inches
in area." The adidas mark of three parallel stripes "will
not ... fit in the area set out by the rule." NCAA execs
defended "their right to restrict logos and fear an adidas
victory would set a dangerous precedent." The complaint
contained no dollar amounts, but adidas attorney Susheela
Jayapal said it is "significant" (K.C. STAR, 11/13).
