SI's "Scorecard" critiques the new book by Jeff
Benedict & SI Associate Editor Don Yaeger -- "Pros and Cons:
The Criminals Who Play in the NFL." It calls the book's
"naive view" that NFL stars should be held "to higher
standards" and the league should take a more active role in
disciplining its players, "Wrong. It's absurd to ask the
NFL to police the off-field activities of more than 2,500
players. ... Looking to the NFL for moral guidance is like
asking the Vatican when to blitz" (SI, 11/16 issue).
ABL: Opening night crowds were the "lowest in the
league's three years," despite the NBA lockout and
"increased marketing." Average attendance for the nine
opening games was 5,491, down from 6,265 for last season's
openers (Portland OREGONIAN, 11/10). A crowd of 1,129
turned out for the Rage's 83-70 victory over the Xplosion at
the Apollo of Temple last night (PHILA. INQUIRER, 11/12).
MLB: MLB President & COO Paul Beeston, in an interview
with USA TODAY's Hal Bodley, on the league's "most pressing
problem" of competitive imbalance and payroll and revenue
disparity between clubs: "[T]here might be 10 different
methods to address this problem. We must devote much of our
offseason energies (to) addressing this" (USA TODAY, 11/12).
