BREAKFAST OF OVERACHIEVERS: FLUTIE FLAKES A SUCCESS STORY
Published October 21, 1998
Bills QB Doug Flutie's "popularity with fans" in the
Buffalo-area is "rising," according to Dan Ralph of the CP.
His cereal, "Flutie Flakes," which was launched two weeks
ago in the upstate N.Y. region, "sold out ... hours after"
Sunday's win against the Jaguars in which Flutie scored the
winning touchdown. Bills Dir of Media Relations Scott
Berchtold: "You wouldn't believe the media requests I'm
getting for Doug. They're coming in from everywhere." Mike
Clohisy, assistant to Flutie's agent Jack Mula, said that he
"didn't think he'd do this much this quickly." Clohisy:
"But it doesn't surprise me" (CP/OTTAWA SUN, 10/21). On
CNN's "Sports Tonight," Josie Karp profiled Flutie and said
that he "has been able to energize a once football-mad
community that had soured on the declining Bills." Bills QB
Rob Johnson: "He's a God up here in this country. He's
everyone's favorite. He's the underdog" (CNN, 10/20).
