NAMES IN THE NEWS

CYNTHIA COOPER will be named "Sportswoman of the Year"
by the Women's Sports Foundation at a banquet at N.Y.'s
Waldorf-Astoria hotel today (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 10/19).
...Actor SAMUEL L. JACKSON will host ESPN's ESPY Awards on
February 15 (USA TODAY, 10/19)....SAMMY SOSA was the first
recipient of the JACKIE ROBINSON Empire State Freedom Medal
(N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/18). Sosa was given a parade in NYC
this weekend, attended by an estimated 25,000 people (N.Y.
POST, 10/18)....A N.Y. POST editorial looked at VENUS,
SERENA and RICHARD WILLIAMS in the aftermath of the WOMEN'S
SPORTS & FITNESS feature (see THE DAILY, 10/16). From the
editorial: "The whining Williams sisters are bad sports with
bad manners whose antics are bad for the game that has made
them rich. As role models, they are a joke. But you can
understand -- if not justify -- their behavior when you
realize that their own role model is Richard Williams, their
father and coach. ... The ironic thing is that he (and they)
are getting away with behavior that shames the sport because
of patronizingly indulgent attitudes in the sports world.
If Richard Williams were white and suburban, his outspoken
prejudices would rightly make him a pariah" (N.Y. POST,
10/18)....Zapata CEO AVRAM GLAZER has "put an end to his
plans for an Internet portal" after "backing away" from
deals with 31 Internet and e-commerce companies "he had
intended to acquire" (N.Y. POST, 10/16).
