LEAGUE NOTES

MLB: In Boston, Peter Gammons: "The handiwork of [MLB
COO] Paul Beeston has been seen throughout the postseason.
For the first time in memory, the tireless PR people have
had backing, so players are made available at all times."
Gammons added that MLB Exec VP/Operations Sandy Alderson has
"essentially ordered clubs" to send full delegations to the
Winter Meetings in Nashville this December. Teams have not
fully participated since '92 (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/18)....In
N.Y., Murray Chass wrote the MLBPA's "strong union feeling"
about replacement players "is apparently thawing" and can
"be seen in the post-season shares voted by players on high-
finishing teams. For the most part ... players have treated
replacements players like anyone else" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/18).
NFL: On "Fox NFL Sunday," James Brown reported, "It
looks like the NFL will not have another expansion team
until well after the year 2001. That's because league
owners are stalling expansion plans in order for any Los
Angeles group to improve its proposal" (Fox, 10/18).
