NIKE AGAIN RAISES PAY FOR INDONESIAN WORKERS

Nike has "agreed to increase wages 22% for entry-level
factory workers in Indonesia," according to the WALL STREET
JOURNAL. The move is retroactive to October 1 and "raises
the entry price for Nike's 20,000 lowest-paid workers to
about $28 a month from $23 a month." Nike also said that it
would "improve the quality and frequency of free meals it
serves workers at the plants." The increase follows Nike's
15% raise last spring. S.F.-based human rights group -- and
Nike critic on workers wages -- Global Exchange (GE)
"applauded the move." GE Dir Medea Benjamin: "Anything they
do to make workers live better is fabulous. But there is
still more that they can do" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/16).
