A N.Y. Daily News/WABC-TV poll shows that N.Y.
residents "would overwhelmingly vote down spending taxpayer
money to build a new Yankee Stadium outside the Bronx if a
proposed referendum were held today," according to Lombardi
& Siegal of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The survey shows that
voters oppose taxpayer support of a new ballpark in
Manhattan 78% to 14%, with every demographic group
"overwhelmingly saying no" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/16).
WILL IT BE A TOPIC ON TV? NEWSDAY's Steve Zipay notes
that both the Yankees and Padres have ballpark concerns
facing them, and writes, "Here's hoping one common issue for
both teams gets more airtime [during the World Series] than
celebrity interviews from national broadcasters Fox (on TV)
and ESPN (on the radio): taxpayer funded stadiums." At a
Yankees rally yesterday in the city, N.Y. Mayor -- and
Manhattan ballpark proponent -- Rudy Giuliani said, "Because
of the prejudice against the Yankees -- in some way -- and
George Steinbrenner, this doesn't get reported. The Yankees
are willing to contribute a fair share of money to the
building of a new stadium, whether it's in the Bronx or in
Manhattan" (Steve Zipay, NEWSDAY, 10/16).
