NASCAR TRIES PAY-PER-VIEW; DE LA HOYA-CHAVEZ HITS 600,000

Speedway Motorsports Corp. has worked out a deal
between Turner Sports and DirecTV to offer an "enhanced"
telecast of this weekend's UAW-GM 500 on PPV, according to
Monte Dutton of SPEEDNET. DirecTV will provide a "full
broadcast" of Sunday's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway as
well as "continuous broadcasts from four in-car cameras" for
$9.95. While CMS President Humpy Wheeler called the PPV
move "a bold and innovative approach" for Winston Cup
racing, he added that he "does not see NASCAR races going to
a completely" PPV format in the future. The regular
broadcast of the race will be on TBS (SPEEDNET, 9/27).
KO FOR PPV: In Dallas, Barry Horn put PPV buys at
"around 700,000" for the Oscar De La Hoya-Julio Cesar Chavez
fight, making it the third-best selling non-heavyweight
fight in PPV history (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/26).
