Calgary's bid to "recapture Olympic glory" was given a
head start yesterday with official city hall approval of the
2010 Winter Games plan (Michael Platt, CALGARY SUN, 9/15).
In Toronto, Allan Maki reports that Calgary hopes to defeat
its Canadian competition on the strength of "a one-two
combination: no government funding required, big surplus
projected." Calgary expects to draw C$920M in revenue from
the 2010 Games on spending of C$707M. On November 21, the
Canadian Olympic Association will decide which Canadian city
will be allowed to bid for the 2010 Games (Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL, 9/15). Also in Toronto, Steve Buffery reports that
China is considering entering a bid, either Beijing or
Shanghai, for the 2008 Summer Games (TORONTO SUN, 9/15).
NOTES: In Sydney, Evans & Fray reported that the naming
rights to Sydney's Olympic Stadium will be sold to one of
the top sponsors of the 2000 Games in a deal worth around
A$30M. But the stadium will not carry the sponsor's name
during the 2000 Games (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 9/9).
Organizers of the Sydney Games "must convince" the IOC that
the water in the Olympic city is safe to drink as two
parasites have been discovered in samples of Sydney's
drinking water (AROUND THE RINGS, 9/15 issue).
