HUIZENGA SPEAKS PUBLICLY ON MARLINS FOR FIRST TIME IN MONTHS

Marlins Owner Wayne Huizenga said Wednesday that "he is
not close to selling the Marlins and that he's prepared to
hold on to the team next season unless he receives an offer
he deems acceptable," according to Barry Jackson of the
MIAMI HERALD. Huizenga, on his $165M price: "It's a fair
asking price. To me, it's on the low side." The "main
stumbling block" in a sale to Palm Beach business exec John
Henry is Huizenga's requirement that Henry sign a 27-year
contract with Huizenga-owned SportsChannel FL. Huizenga
said that he agreed to sell SportsChannel to Cablevision
several months ago, contingent on the Marlins being sold,
and he "doesn't know" if the 27-year agreement can be
altered. Jackson: "If it is significantly altered,
Cablevision probably would not be willing to pay as much for
SportsChannel." Huizenga: "If a potential buyer wants (a
shorter SportsChannel contract) I would have to call
Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan and convince him to
shorten the deal. Will Dolan do it? I don't know."
Huizenga says he now might sell SportsChannel before selling
the Marlins. Huizenga, on team President Don Smiley's
protracted effort to buy the team: "I'm very frustrated.
But what do I have to gain by pulling the plug on Don? Yes,
I'm disappointed. Smiley's deal was all but done (last
month), but people have backed out." Huizenga, asked if
Smiley misled him: "No. Don didn't mislead anyone. USA
Broadcasting backed out of Smiley's deal." USA Broadcasting
Exec VP Adam Ware denied the claim (MIAMI HERALD, 8/20).
ANOTHER TAKE: Meanwhile, in Fort Lauderdale, Alan Snel
writes that Huizenga "insists" whoever meets his asking
price first will gain control of the team. Huizenga: "As
far as I'm concerned, the first guy that gets there (gets
the team)." On the NHL Panthers, Huizenga said, "We have no
plans to sell the Panthers. ... I can't tell you that won't
     change" (Fort Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 8/20).
