Venus and Serena Williams are profiled by NEWSWEEK's
Peyser & Samuels under the header, "Venus And Serena Against
The World." Peyser & Samuels: "Neither sister has yet to
win a major singles title, but they've grabbed the attention
of tennis fanatics and casual fans alike with their
muscular, superconfident style and their peculiar path to
success." Asked about the coverage after her behavior at
the U.S. Open against Irina Spirlea and her "tearful
tantrum" at Wimbledon, Venus said, "It was really unfair,
because it gave fans a false picture of what Serena and I
are about. We're really fun and don't do bad things"
(NEWSWEEK, 8/24). In a sidebar, Peyser & Samuels profile
the other WTA Tour stars under the header, "The Teen Queens:
Meet The New Kids On The Court. They Strut, They Squabble,
They Pose For Fashion Spreads. They're Also Great For The
Game." Those featured include Martina Hingis, Mirjana
Lucic, Anna Kournikova and Patty Schnyder (NEWSWEEK, 8/24).
MORE ON THE GIRLS: The WTA Tour was profiled in the
Montreal GAZETTE, and Pat Hickey wrote that women's tennis
"has become more popular than the men's game and if you ask
fans why, they talk about the Generation Nexters," including
Hingis, Kournikova and the Williams sisters (GAZETTE, 8/15).
On Saturday, CNN's "Page 1" will look at the popularity of
the WTA Tour and its personalities. Hingis: "We all are
young, we all look different, we have our own styles, and we
always want to look better than the other one. So, it's
like a kind of a 'Melrose Place' thing" ("Page 1," 8/15).
