MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

          ON THE LINKS: Mark O'Meara will bring in about $2.5-3M
     in endorsements this year, including multi-year pacts with
     AT&T, Charles Schwab and Comdisco, and other deals with
     Toyota, Taylor Made, TopFlite, Etonic (shoes) and Descente
     (clothing) (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/14).  The SEATTLE TIMES
     featured a list of 25 PGA Tour players and their equipment
     deals around this week's PGA Championship (SEATTLE TIMES,
     8/13)....Samsung officials estimate $150M in "advertising
     benefits" from their logo impressions following the recent
     exposure of Se Ri Pak.  The company now predicts Pak will be
     worth "about" $1B "over the next few years" (AD AGE, 8/14).
          NOTES: McDonald's will debut new ads starring Cubs RF
     Sammy Sosa promoting its new line of Spicy Mighty Wings. The
     spots, set to air for the next three weeks, will appear in
     English and Spanish (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/14)....Raptors draft
     pick Vince Carter, who has signed with Puma to market the
     Puma Cell Origin shoe, will officially announce the deal in
     N.Y. on Tuesday.  Carter "is the only basketball player
     under the Puma umbrella" (TORONTO SUN, 8/14)....Roger Penske
     denied reports that he will buy the No Fear clothing
     company.  Penske VP Dan Luginbuhl said at one time there
     "were informal discussions about Penske buying all or part"
     of the company, but that "nothing is going to happen"
     (AUTOWEEK, 8/17 issue)....The Cale Yarborough Winston team
     will feature the AFL logo on the car of Rich Bickle at this
     weekend's Pepsi 400 and at next week's Goody's 500 (AFL).
     ...The Sanford Independence Bowl is raising its '98 payout
     to $1M, which was made possible through the addition of
     Office Depot as a sponsor of the game (Sanford).
