PETERSEN HITS THE BEACH WITH ACQUISITION OF SURFER MAGAZINE

          The Petersen Companies, publisher of Sport magazine,
     has acquired Surfer Productions, which publishes Surfer,
     Powder, BIKE and Skateboarder magazines.  Included in the
     acquisition is Surfer Publications' film and TV unit, which
     has produced 116 original TV programs and 27 home video
     titles.  Two episodes of Surfer and BIKE magazines will be
     produced for the Outdoor Life Network, and four episodes of
     Snowboarder are tentatively set for production with ESPN2. 
     Surfer's staff will remain in CA.  The Petersen Raw Sport
     Group contains the titles Slam, Blitz, Dirt Rider, Mountain
     Biker, MX Rider, BMX Racer, Inline, Gravity, Box and Inline
     Hockey News (Petersen Companies).  One exec "close to the
     deal" estimated the pact at $30M.  The acquisition also
     includes Surfer's Web site, www.surfmag.com (AD AGE, 8/11).
